September 25 meeting!

We hope you all had a great summer! Greater Seattle will hold its first meeting of the year this coming Tuesday, September 25th.

Please join us at Total Wine and More in the Northgate area - 525 NE Northgate Way #5 Seattle, WA 98125. We will have a wine tasting with light snacks from 6:30 to 7:00 followed by our continuing education class from 7:00 to 8:00.

Tuesday's speaker will be Sandy Kemper, RDH and the founder of Smiles Forever, a non-proft foundation.

Sandy graduated from the University of Iowa in 1976 with a B.S. in Dental Hygiene. For several years, she was in clinical practice in the Seattle area. In 1999 she decided to venture out into community service.

She went to Cochabamba, Bolivia with a humanitarian group of dental hygienists and dentists. After working in a homeless women's shelter, witnessing the plight of young women there and seeing the lack of preventive dental care, Sandy decided to take action.

With the help of friends, family and fellow dental professionals, she launched Smiles Forever in 2000. Eighteen years later, 37 young women have graduated from the Smiles Forever Dental Hygiene two year vocational training program in Bolivia and 37,000 impoverished children and adults have received free preventive and restorative care. Come hear more about Sandy's remarkable journey!

Update on Continuing Education Credits

Washington State dental hygienists are required to have proof of 15 hours of CE per year for re-license. The courses must relate to dental hygiene. No specifications are made that limit on-line courses.

The clinical dental team must also have BLS for health care providers certification by the American Heart Association.

If you are audited, you need at minimum two years of proof of continuing education.

CE benefit for members

The greater Seattle Dental Hygienists' Society provides, as a member benefit, several free continuing education credits every year. CE courses are offered in conjunction with general meetings, volunteer events, and as a week-end CE course.

Check the general meeting information on this page or the GSDHS calendar for exact dates.
